About KRCRC

WHO WE ARE / WHAT WE DO / HOW WE ARE ORGANIZED / OUR HISTORY / OUR SYMBOL / OUR BROCHURE

WHO WE ARE
Through education and advocacy, the Kentucky Religious Coalition for Reproductive Choice (KRCRC) brings the moral power of religious communities to ensure reproductive choice and health throughout Kentucky. We seek to give clear voice to the reproductive issues of all people in Kentucky, especially underserved populations. KRCRC is made up of people from a variety of faith traditions, including:

African Methodist Episcopal Humanist Roman Catholic
Baptist Jewish Society of Friends
Buddhist Lutheran Unitarian Universalist
Disciples of Christ Metropolitan Community United Methodist
Episcopal Pentecostal United Church of Christ
Freethinkers Presbyterian Unity

People and groups of all faiths, as well as people who do not have a faith affiliation, are welcome.

We believe that a woman's right to make reproductive choices is sacred and fundamental to religious freedom.

  • We oppose government interference and coercion in family decisions about when and whether to have children.
  • We spread the message that mainstream people of faith are pro-choice, pro-family planning, and pro-sex education.
  • We support women to make choices that are in keeping with their faith and circumstances.
  • We reach out to people of color, those living in poverty, and other populations that are disproportionately affected by restrictive laws and policies.
  • We advocate for resources to make reproductive options a reality for all.
  • We engage in discussions to explore diverse theological perspectives for reproductive choice.
  • We support compassionate, non-judgmental, all options, faith-based counseling for women who are facing problem pregnancies.

OUR BEGINNINGS
In 1973, Doris Schneider organized Kentuckians to establish a state affiliate of the national Religious Coalition for Abortion Rights. Working with religious organizations throughout the state, she tirelessly and fearlessly engaged pro-choice people of faith to volunteer their time and to keep reproductive choice legal and safe for women in Kentucky. In 1975, the Kentucky Religious Coalition for Abortion Rights incorporated as a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization.

In 1994, the organization changed its name to the Kentucky Religious Coalition for Reproductive Choice. Through the years the leadership changed but supporters continued to work tirelessly to keep reproductive freedom a choice for every Kentuckian. We encourage you, your faith community and others to join us in our efforts to keep reproductive choice a moral decision made by women and their God, not by the government.

OUR SYMBOL

The logo of the Religious Coalition for Reproductive Rights combines the symbols of two great religions, Judiaism and Christianity. The Christian cross is made up of many branches, representing the many sects of Christianity. Its lower branch is part of a menorah, symbol of the Hebrew scriptures, in which the Jewish and Christian faith share common roots. Resting on the base of three vertical bars which is an ancient symbol of an active intellect, the cross and menorah are intertwined to demonstrate the unity of purpose of the Religious Coalition for Reproductive Rights.
